His life, his legacy and his art over
the course of our generations
The show of the Fondació Joan Miró is dedicated to the collection of the artist, and how this collection lead to his legacy and his museum.
The exhibition which has been developed by Marko Daniel, Elena Escolar and Dolors Rodríguez Roig is the reconstruction of this story with 180 objects, from seven decades. Most of the objects are paintings and works on paper, but also unpublished documentation and family photographs, some of them on deposit or given to the museum when it was created to the last one deposited this year, from the third generation of the family of Joan Miró.

Section and purpose

In the first section of the exhibition, the curators decided to showcase his earliest work, when Joan was still bully for his art by his father. First as a landscape and figurative painter, he will later find his style. To do so, he will need to explore, try and failed, that's why he will keep all the preliminary drawings, documents and finished works that would end up comprising his personal collection.
The first one being: Painting (The bottle of wine), from 1924. This picture is linking his parent, his family, his influence on surrealism and the power and colours of fauvism and cubism.
The second section of the show is dedicated to his relation with Pilar Juncosa, his wife and her supporter for his art and his passion. After and during his life, numerous pieces will be given to her and his collection for the "Pilar collection".
In the collection the artist has given one painter per series, such as Painting (1936) and Morning star (1940). But when the couple had their first child, Dolors will be given a part of this collection for his own one. Miró left a written record of these gifts by noting ‘appartenant à Pilar’ and ‘appartenant à Mlle. Dolores Miró’ on the back of each piece.
The third section of the show is dedicated to the three collections, the collection of the artist, Pilar’s and their daughter’s. But due to the tragedy of the war and the exile in France, where the artist began his Constellations series and finally took refuge in Mallorca.
Due to the lack of materials during the war, Miró stopped painting with oils for a while to work on paper and watercolor. A few yers later, Miró family left France and leave between Barcelona and Mont-roig, in rural Tarragona. At that time, he achieved his Constellations and kept pieces for himself, his wife and his daughter.
Pilar and Dolors followed Miró when he travelled to New York in 1947, due to the commission of a mural for a hotel in Cincinnati.
Over the years, the collection grew... and the family became huge. Dolors had two children and two more during his second marriage. During this time, Miro was questioning himself and trace to Japan due to his art, influenced by Japanese calligraphy.
In the mid-1960s, the artist came up with four grand projects for his beloved city: Barcelona. The first being the Airport Mural, the Monument for Parc Cervantes, the Mosaic at Pla de l’Os on the Rambla and the Fundació Joan Miró, consisting of his donation of work to the city. The building, which will be designed by Josep Lluís Sert, will reflect the importance of architecture and the environment into his oeuvre.
