Let's discuss

Hello old and new friends of Lucas Art Talks

You might be an old or a new follower of my Instagram, or you randomly click on this website. Before I begin my journey with this "new medium", I’ve decided to give you a mission: ask me a question.

Why?

Because you might not know me, you might not saw me in "real life" or you might be a new subscriber of this website or my Instagram, right?

Question from an unknown subscriber: How old are you?

Lucas Gasgar aka Lucas Art Talks: I’m 20 years old.

Anna (Haeppypeppy on Instagram): Can you describe your dream job?

Lucas Gasgar aka Lucas Art Talks: This is a complicated question to answer, but if I need to give one, it will be to become a curator specialised in Modern art.

As someone who visit museums and exhibitions every week, I see myself working behind the scenes of a museum, with a team, to create a new exhibition every year, from monographic exhibition (Georges Braque, Jean Hélion, etc) to thematic exhibition (Men nudes, dream and desire in Modern and Contemporary Art, Artist and medium, beyond their "standard", etc).

I already have a lot of projects in the making on my computer, now I just need a job, a budget, and a museum to work with.

Question from an unknown subscriberHow did you have the idea to create this channel?

Lucas Gasgar aka Lucas Art TalksThis idea was a long story, from the creation of a concept, the design of the publications, the themes, the colors, etc.

But everything started in 2019, I had the project to produce and distribute a podcast dedicated to art and art history.

As most of the podcast of this theme and this format use well known artist, I've decided to shift my attention to lesser known artists and art movements.

Therefore, I started the preparation of this project in 2020. As the global crisis started, I thought I need a new beginning, I started this podcast and my Instagram called "Lucas Art Talks".

However, I started to think about a few rules :

- Never publish something about an exhibition or an artwork you never saw.

- I should not travel more than 500 km from my hometown (Strasbourg, France).

On the 29th of June 2020, I publish my first publication...

Sara Rizzi (_sararizzi on Instagram)Is there any street art in Basel you’re recommending visiting?

Lucas Gasgar aka Lucas Art TalksThere is actually a few street artists in Basel, but I will mostly answer with a question for you: what’s the definition of street art?

Is it something made by an unknown artist on a wall, with paint and marker? Is it a sculpture / installation in a public space ?

Think about this question and write me a message when you got an answer.

Question from an unknown subscriber: My favourite artist?

Lucas Gasgar aka Lucas Art Talks: My favourite artist (at the moment I'm writing this article)

are :

Georges Seurat (1859-1891), the father of the post-Impressionist movement due to the creation of the pointillism technique and the use of the color wheel and studies of Michel-Eugène Chevreul, a French chemist.

Paul Signac (1863-1935), the friend of Georges Seurat and next leader of the post-Impressionist movement after the death of Georges Seurat. Therefore, Signac described his technique as "point" of different colors juxtapose from each other.

Léo Gestel (1881-1941) was a Dutch Painter and one of the leader of Dutch Modernism with Piet Mondrian. While Gestel explored many styles to discover his own, he never sticks to "one".

Edward Ruscha (1937-Now), the famous American artist influenced by the Pop Art movement (Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, etc.). While Ruscha's works focus on the use of letters, symbols and photos, his early works focus on the use of collage (mostly inspired by the Dada and the surrealist).

Sean Scully (1945-Now), the "stripy guy" of contemporary paintings. While his works was influenced by Agnès Martin or Piet Mondrian, his practice reflect on the use of motif and colors and their perceptions to each other.

Julie Mehretu (1970-Now) is one of the most influential American artist of her time. From the use of Pop Art technique (mostly screen printing) to her contemporary experimentation with forms and materials.

Paul Signac (1863 - 1935),
Antibes, le soir, 1914, Oil on canvas, 73 x 92 cm,
Collection of the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Strasbourg (MAMCS)

Question from an unknown subscriber: A mind blown moment you had related to art?

Lucas Gasgar aka Lucas Art TalksWhen I was young, maybe 14 or 15 years old, my class and I had a visit of the Museum Of Strasbourg and more precisely to the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MAMCS).

While the teacher and the educator walk us through the galleries of the museum, I had to stop myself in from of this work by Paul Signac.

Therefore, the work is quite colorful and calming. But if you look closer, you can see 2 important things, the subject and the date : 1914, the starting year of the First World War...
